Despite past progress, approximately 3 billion people across the globe have low-quality diets. Nearly a quarter of all children under five years of age are stunted, more than 2 billion people have insufficient micronutrients. While undernourishment is concentrated in developing countries, the incidence of overweight and obesity is growing in every region. As a result, many economies are seriously underperforming, and diet-related chronic diseases are placing ever-greater demands on health care systems.

At the same time, environmental impacts of current food production and consumption patterns are rampant. The food system contributes to approximately 20-30% of greenhouse gases (GHG) total emissions, 15-25% from agriculture/land use change and 5-10% from packaging, transportation and waste disposal.

The situation is set to worsen dramatically over the next 20 years as powerful drivers of change such as population growth, climate change, diet transition towards animal products and urbanization converge on food systems. This concern is reflected by various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – namely, “Zero hunger” (SDG-2), “Good health and wellbeing” (SDG-3), and “Responsible consumption and production” (SGD-12), just to mention the most important ones – that try to address these issues. While these problems are of utmost urgency for low- and middle-income countries, they are also a stark concern for all countries.

Considerable challenges need to be addressed in order to have an effective and sustainable diet transition. In particular, food systems need to be harnessed so that they nourish rather than merely feed people. This alone will open up countless opportunities for interventions that decision makers can tailor to specific situations. Furthermore, priorities for action at national and international levels as well as detailed advice and guidance need to be identified in order to provide guidance to decision makers.

The 8th AIEAA Congress will therefore focus on the conundrum represented by the interaction of economic development, nutrition and health, and sustainability. Sustainable diets are intended to address the increasing health and environmental concerns related to food production and consumption. Although many candidates for sustainable diets have emerged, a comprehensive analysis of these diets has not been done yet. A number of public policies have been proposed to promote healthy and environmentally sustainable diets at production and consumption levels, but the level of integration is still relatively low. New evidence is needed on the effectiveness of public policies for sustainable diets.

AIEAA welcomes the submission of contributions on the topics above. However, the submission of contributions on other agricultural and applied economics topics is encouraged as well.

Contribution proposals should be submitted in English through the conference website (https://www.conftool.org/aieaa2019/). There are three types of contributions: contributed papers, organized sessions, and posters.

Contributed papers
The full version of accepted papers, or a revised version of the long abstract, formatted according to the Paper Template must be submitted by May 20, 2019.
Upon Authors’ authorization, the long abstracts of accepted papers will be made available on the conference website, and the full text/long abstract will be posted on AgEcon Search.
A selection of accepted full papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of Bio-based and Applied Economics, after going through the journal’s standard review process.

Organized sessions
Organized session papers comply with the same regulations of contributed papers (see above).

Posters
Poster papers comply with the same regulations of contributed papers (see above).
Authors are responsible for bringing and hanging their own poster (A0 format, i.e. 70 x 100 cm).
Poster will be discussed in a dedicated poster session (time and location will be announced as soon as the final program will be available).

Presenting author’s registration
Paper, poster, or organized session presenting authors must register by May 20, 2019; failing that, the paper/session/poster will be withdrawn from the conference program.

The 8th AIEAA Conference will take place at UNISER (Polo Universitario di Pistoia) , via Pertini 358, Pistoia.

Travelling by car

From Milan-Bologna and from Rome: take motorway A1 direction Florence, then exit at Firenze Nord and take motorway A11 “Firenze-Mare” direction Pisa.
From Genova-Livorno: take motorway A12 and then, at Pisa Nord exit, take motorway A1 direction Florence.
Exit the A11 motorway at PISTOIA. Heading for Pistoia Centro following Via Ciliegiole. Then turn right to Via dell’Annona road. At the next roundabout, turn left (second exit) to Via Ugo Schiano road and straight on till the next roundabout, where you will have to take the third exit (left) to Via Pertini road. The UNISER headquarters building is 100 meters on the right. Distance from Pistoia Motorway A11 Exit to Conference Venue is about 4 km.

Parking is available close to the venue and around the railway station area. Some of them are free of charge. Please refer to the map, where parkings are highlighted in green boxes. A map of all Parking areas in Pistoia can be found at: http://www.vivipistoia.it/spostarsi/parcheggi-a-pistoia/

 

Travelling by train

Pistoia is located on the Firenze-Lucca-Viareggio line. There are quite a lot of trains from the closest cities around Pistoia (Florence, Pisa, Prato). Please refer to https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html for timetable. Tickets must be bought before getting the train.

  • · From Florence: direct train from Santa Maria Novella railway station (33 to 51 minutes depending on the train)
  • · From Pisa: from Stazione Centrale railway station, changing train at Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station (on average it takes 1 h 45’)
  • · From Prato: direct train from Stazione Centrale railway station (on average it takes 15 to 20 minutes)

On exiting the Pistoia railway station turn to the left and walk along Via Pertini. The UNISER headquarters is on the right after about 10 minutes walking.

Travelling by plane

From Firenze Amerigo Vespucci Airport (https://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/en/):

1. You can go to Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station and take a train to Pistoia (see Travelling by train section)

A) T2 tram line: leaving every 4-5 minutes from the Firenze Aeroporto Tram station (https://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/en/the-passengers/transport/tramway.html), 30 m on the left exiting the Arrivals terminal. Average time to Santa Maria Novella railway station: 20 min. Ticket price: 4.50 euro.
B) Volainbus shuttle: running every 30 minutes from the Airport (https://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/en/the-passengers/transport/bus.html), 150 m on the right exiting the Arrivals terminal. Average time to city centre (BUSITALIA Bus Station Via Santa Caterina da Siena, 17 – near to the Florence Santa Maria Novella Railway Station): 20 minutes. Ticket price: 4.50 euro.
C) Taxi: There is a taxi service from Florence Airport to Florence city centre (8 km -15 minutes) The Taxis rank is in front of the terminal (https://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/en/the-passengers/transport/taxi.html) or can be called by radiotaxi ( tel. +39 055 4242 - 055 4390 - 055 4798). Price to city Centre (depending on the taxi company and traffic): around 25-30 euros.

2. You can take a taxi service from Florence Airport to Pistoia (40 km – 30/40 minutes). The Taxis rank is in front of the terminal (https://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/en/the-passengers/transport/taxi.html) or can be called by radiotaxi ( tel. +39 055 4242 - 055 4390 - 055 4798). The price depends on the taxi company and traffic: around 70-80 euros to Pistoia.

 From Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport (https://www.pisa-airport.com/en/):

  1. The best solution to go to Pistoia is by train. The Pisa Airport is about 1 km from Pisa Centrale railway station, from which you can reach any Italian railway network destination. At less than 40 metres from the Passenger Terminal at the Pisa Airport, you can find the People Mover for direct connections between the Pisa Airport and the Pisa Centrale railway station. The service is available every day from 6:00 AM to midnight at 5/8 minute intervals. Ticket price: 2,70 euro.
  2. There is a taxi service from Pisa Airport to Pistoia (80 km) operated by Cooperativa Pisana Tassisti – CO.TA.PI (www.cotapi.it). Taxis provide service 24 hours a day. The taxi stand is in front of the airport on the arrivals side and can be contacted by phone at +39 050 541600. Fare schedules are subject to change. Price to Pistoia (depending on traffic): around 135 euros.

If you don't have an user account, please click on "Create account and register for conference" and follow the instructions.
If you already have a user account, please log in with your username and password, select “Register as Participant” and follow the instructions.
If you are an author of an accepted paper or poster, please consider that, for presenting your contribution, at least one author of your paper/poster should register to the conference.

Regular fee: 200€ (150€ if already member in 2019)
Reduced fee (Ph.D. students, Postdoc): 100€ (80€ if already member in 2019)
Donor member fee: 250€ (150 € if already member in 2019)

La nuova sfida per la competitività: imprese agricole in rete verso la sostenibilità" will take place on Thursday, 13 June 2019 from 10.00 am to 12.00 am (registration will start at 9.00 am) at Sala Maggiore, Piazza del Duomo 1, Pistoia (the whole event will be in Italian).

Participation to the Pre-Conference is free of charge.
If you are registered for the AIEAA Conference and you indicated that you will participate at the Pre-Conference you do not need to register.
If you are not registered to the AIEAA Conference but you wish to participate to the Pre-Conference, you are kindly asked to send a confirmation email to aieaa2019@disei.unifi.it.
